One of the most significant usages of pump shaft sleeve is to protecte the pump shaft from erosion, corrosion and wear at seal chambers, leakage joints, internal bearings, and in the waterways at packing and mechanical seals.

Pump shaft sleeve also has other functions, for example, it can balance part of the hydraulic force and support the shaft. The axial thrust of the impeller is transmitted through the sleeve to the external shaft nut in medium-size centrifugal slurry pumps.

If the cantilevered centrifugal slurry pump adopts packing seal, the sleeve is usually used to key the shaft to prevent rotation. In the other hand, when the pump adopts mechanical seal, the shaft sleeve is usually a part of the mechanical seal package.
